AVG Internet Security 2012 – A Buyers Guide and Review

AVG Internet Security 2012

AVG (Anti Virus Group) released its first security software in 1992, which was given to masses as a free security software. As a free software, it was very popular and very effective against viruses and spyware. They were even listed in top of the charts with other popular security softwares such as Norton and McAfee. Even now, it is estimated that there are 98 million AVG users worldwide. AVG Internet Security 2012 is a complete package which is the paid version of the software. The paid package, apart from giving an Antivirus protection, assessment of dangerous websites, spam and phishing detection, identity protection and two way firewall. It is also capable of doing a scan for preventing low level infiltration by rootkits.

AVG comes with a very simple and user friendly interface.

AVG protects your using four different detection techniques mainly signature, polymorphic, heuristic and behavioral scans. Heuristic and behavioral scans use software behavior to determine if it is malicious.

Main features added to AVG Internet Security 2012 are Advisor and Accelerator. Advisor feature in AVG recommends user to find the best course of action in case of threat detection. Accelerator feature is AVG is used to speed up file and data downloads.

AVG does have options for online protection. It comes with a site advisor which shows reports to check if the website is safe to browse.  There is also an option to verify for safe URL. AVG Internet Security protects you when shopping and banking by keeping your identity safe. They do provide parental control. But it needs to be installed as an add-on, also very inexpensive.

AVG Internet Security 2012 comes with a 2 way firewall. Firewall prevents inbound and outbound attacks, while Identity Protection secures personal content you enter online.

AVG also excelled in scan results. A test on AVG Internet Security 2012 ability to detect scareware gave a score of 9.5 which was the next best to Malwarebytes. In the tests conducted on scanning speed, it did an impressive scan at the rate of 64 files/sec. The first time when you run a scan after installing AVG, it takes more time than the next scans. This is because AVG does some changes to optimize settings to speed up subsequent scans. Another test was conducted to check the impact of software on the system resources. It took 44 sec to copy a 1GB files on a high end machine which is very impressive. However it took more than a minute when copying was done while the scan was running, which is also impressive.

In short, AVG Internet Security 2012 gave an impressive robust performance and fairly good detection rate. Even though I recommend AVG Internet Security 2012 over Norton and McAfee, it doesn’t count towards the top of my list in security software.
