Google has come up with a dedicated e-reader which is branded as iriver Story HD. Google teamed up with device manufacturer iriver to develop this application. The device is slim, light weight(only 7.3 ounces), Wi-Fi enabled, has a 6″ E Ink screen with a 768-by-1024 resolution display and a QWERTY keyboard. Battery life according to the manufacturer is 3 weeks. It’s sad that it don’t come with a touch screen. The release of a dedicated eBooks reader puts Google’s store more directly in opposition to NOOK eBook Reader and Amazon’s Kindle.

iriver Story HDsupports PDFs and EPub files, text files, FB2, and DJVU formats.  It can also read Excel, Word, and PowerPoint documents.

iriver Story HD will have access to more than 3 million books for free and also to thousands of Google ebooks for sale. Use WiFi  to connect your iriver Story to the full Google eBooks catalog for out-of-the-box access to a complete ebookstore. You can also leave your personal ebook in the cloud, so you can pick it off later when you want to access it from other devices such as smart phone, laptop or tablet PC. Google eBooks can be read from a variety of devices which uses Android or iOS with a compatible app installed.

This device is going to be a big milestone in Google’s attempt to popularize  and expand Google eBooks.

iriver Story HD was released in market on July 17th 2011 at a competing price of $139.99. Watch the video review
