Wix provides hundreds of free designer made templates for starters. You are given full access to change the color, background, text and place pictures wherever is needed. The interface is easy to navigate with easy drag and drop features. The presence of template is a blessing for those who don’t want to learn or deal with coding. But as you go deeper and want to incorporate more advanced options, there is a steep learning curve which may not go well with most beginners.
To start working with Wix, you need to sign up for a free account. After logging in, you will be offered a variety of categories to choose from. For e.g., Music, Entertainment, Online Shop, Personal, Photography and so on. Once you select a category, you will be given a list of templates to choose from. These templates are based on the layout of some popular and successful websites. All you need to do is to let the creativity flow and fill in according to your needs.
If you are not interested in any of the templates or if you want to brave starting from scratch, you can go for the blank template. Even though starting from scratch means lot more work, it is easy with the provided help system. There are some videos provided in the start and help pages to help you navigate through different options for designing the website. Al though it is quite easy, don’t be surprised when you get stuck at times trying more advanced options.
Now you must be wondering, if there is a paid membership and any advantage that comes with it. Yes, it does. There is a monthly and yearly plan with process ranging from $5, $10, $15 and $20 plans. It is based on whether you can have the Wix Ads removed, add favicons, include mobile ads, include google analytics and so on. Every finished website carries a small Wix Ad included in a permanent bar at the bottom of the screen. It’s not a problem, but some might find it not aesthetic in a well designed site. By going for a plan about $10, you can get rid of this ad.
With everything well said about Wix, it does have one major drawback. Once you made up your mind on a specific template, you cannot switch it back to another one unless you delete the site from My Account settings page. This is a major drawback and it is time for Wix to fix this immediately by allowing switching themes without disturbing the core contents.
Final Verdict: Overall Wix is good for anyone looking for a free website builder. If you are looking for creating a basic general information site without going through the complexity of coding it, this one is for you. Wix also have added more support for sharing with social media and lot of apps for different purpose to add to your site. But in case, if you are looking for more advanced and in depth design and access to site coding, this is not for you.
