ASUS finally decided to look at the case. More precisely, on game cases for the end user. So desktops and various versions of the tower with the ASUS logo periodically appear here and there, at exhibitions or in the corporate sector. Retail models were very simple, and those were rare. A strange thing – for more than fifteen years to produce all the stuffing of the system unit, and almost no attention is paid to the iron boxes themselves. And here we have ROG Strix Helios, made according to all the rules: internal space, RGB lights, tempered glass.

ASUS ROG Strix Helios  Packing

ASUS ROG Strix Helios Case packaging

The case comes in a huge cardboard box – 700 x 730 x 390 mm. For comparison, the dimensions of the Strix Helios 591 x 565 x 250 mm. The empty space between the body and the cardboard of the packaging is filled with polyethylene foam and air. Accessories and screws are not enough, but the instruction pleases with clear pictures. To protect against all kinds of pollution, Strix Helios is covered in a fabric cover with the ROG logo.

Externally, the case looks original and presentable – a steel base, walls of tempered smoky glass, in the front cover a glass insert with the logo of ROG. ASUS is positioning it as a showcase, the main task is to grab the audience attention. Glass walls work fine mirror.

Steel – the material is durable but heavy, and therefore the body weighs about 18 kg. With a powerful filling and liquid cooling system can be all 30. Immediately the question arises of carrying – not enough for the glass walls! The problem is solved in an original way: a wide sling is stretched between two aluminum corners, for which it is convenient to grab hands. If necessary, it can be quickly removed, as the “locks” are made with velcro.

System controls and connectors are collected in one place – on the front cover. The layout of all the elements is thoughtful and practical: on the top there is a power button, at the bottom there are reboots, on the sides there are buttons for controlling the backlight and fan speed with the corresponding indicators, in the center, there are five USB third versions. One of the USB Type-C, the rest of the Type-A. Next, to the reset button are mounted 3.5 mm jacks for headphones and microphone.

On the back wall, everything is traditional – expansion slots, a cutout for the power supply in the lower part, and a seat for the fan – at the top.

ASUS ROG Strix Helios Internal Design

The side walls are glass with a thickness of 4 mm, crimped on both sides by metal profiles. Screwless fastening of the walls, for dismantling it is enough to press on the ledges in the upper part of the rear wall.

Strix Helios is made according to the “modern technique”: there are no baskets under the drives behind the front wall, the power supply unit is located in the lower quarter. More than ¾ of the volume is allocated for the motherboard, video card, and their cooling systems, there will be no problems with the placement of overall components.

If desired, one or two video cards can be oriented parallel to the motherboard. In the back wall, there are two additional grooves for expansion slats, and the bundle includes a specialized plug for rotating the second video card 90 degrees. There are few practical benefits of such a “reversal” of video cards, but the overall appearance of the system is more presentable, especially if the backlight is built into the cooling system.

Air circulation is provided by four complete ASUS A1425L125 fans capable of unwinding up to 1,400 revolutions per minute.

Three of them are installed on the frame behind the front part of the body, working on blowing.

The frame is fastened into the grooves, fixed with two thumb screws. Regular fans can be replaced by any 120/140 mm models, it is possible to adjust their position within small limits.

In front of the fans, at a short distance from the glass insert, an easily removable dust filter is installed. A similar design on the top wall: seats for 120/140 mm fans, above them a quick-release filter.

ASUS ROG Strix Helios Case remove dust

The design of the filter is simple – small plastic mesh in the frame. Filters on the front and top panels are additionally equipped with perforated metal grilles.

The fourth fan is installed above the motherboard connectors, running on blowing.

Instead of fans, it is possible to install radiators of liquid cooling systems on one, two or three sections.

A filter is also installed in the lower part of the case to prevent dust from entering the power supply.

Next, to the power supply unit, it is possible to install a basket on two 2.5 ″ / 3.5 ″ devices or one 120 mm fan.

In the basket, drives are mounted on a plastic sled.

The power supply and the basket are closed with a double L-shaped cover with a window. The latter is provided for backlit power supplies.

At the same time, access to the front panel fans is maintained, as well as air circulation due to ventilation slots.

Another four 2.5 ” disks can be installed on the reverse side of the motherboard pallet. By default, this compartment is closed with a door of dark plastic. This solution allows you to hide all the excess wires and cables, and if necessary, easy to get to them.

Each drive has its own plate, fixed with a knurled screw.

Just above the drives, you can see a built-in reobas board for six fans with three and four-contact connectors. Turns are controlled from the front of the case.

Many design solutions Strix Helios tied to the backlight, built-in motherboards, video cards, power supplies and other components. Only the front panel illumination from the stack is integrated into the case, and it is made qualitatively – the glow is equally beautiful both in the dark and in light. The option to connect to the motherboard is available (connector for RGB tapes).

It is also worth noting that the case is really big – EATX motherboards and elongated power supplies look very small in the general background.

This turns into a minus – the standard cable for additional power of the motherboard 60 centimeters long is not enough, you need at least 70, or even 80 cm, taking into account convenient installation. With the ATX24 connector, the solution is smarter – an insert is installed that hides almost the entire thick cable.

Just below the installed design to support massive video cards. Useful thing, especially for top boards with massive cooling systems. Of course, they do not break out the PSI Express slots, but the sagging of some video cards can be seen with the naked eye.

ASUS ROG Strix Helios Conclusion

Asus ROG Strix Helios is an excellent case for those cases when the computer should be both beautiful and powerful. Durable steel frame, tempered glass mirror walls, pleasant RGB front panel lights.
