This error message was displayed when I tried to install Windows 10 Anniversary update. Before trying to install anniversary update, all the pending updates were installed. This include operating system update and the updates for my MS Office.

I use a Windows 10 Enterprise Edition which is volume licensed at work place. Being in training department and doing experiment with different features, I need higher end versions of Windows 10. So it was easy to get Windows 10 Enterprise edition to get installed on my PC.

Since I like to see what gets installed on my PC, I only do manual updating. The last weekend was the first time when I tried to install Anniversary update on my PC. That is when I was confronted with this error message denying me the right to install the update. It came as a surprise as all the computers in our corporate network never had a problem and got all the updates installed.

Reason for no update for Windows 10 Enterprise Edition

Windows Enterprise Edition is not meant for personal computer. Microsoft don’t give Windows 10 Enterprise Edition even if you are ready to pay for the software. The Enterprise edition is only allowed for corporate’s who like to buy the licenses in volume. That explains why the computer needs to be in a domain to install the update.
What Microsoft did is absurd, but that is how it is.

  • Go to MSDN or Microsoft Volume licensing Portal to get the ISO file needed for the installation. The file is 1607 ISO file. It’s a 3.64 GB file. Run the file and the installation will proceed without any problem.
  • You can also search torrents for “1607 ISO” to download the file. Remember, there is a risk associated with downloading the file using torrents as there is no guarantee that the file is original and not tampered.

I proceeded with downloading the torrent version. The installation proceeded without any problem. It took almost  30 mts to complete the installation. Even though I have an i7 machine with 16GB memory and dedicated graphics card, it might be the slow internet speed in this part of the world that slowed down the installation.
