Fix Windows Media Player service failure in Windows 10

Windows Media Player, the default media player is one of the best and most widely used of all media player softwares. Being part of the operating system, the media player is also vulnerable to frequent errors and unexplained shutdowns.

One of the most frequent error messages is when Windows Media Player refuses to open or force closing the application with the error Windows Media Player service failed. Simply closing Windows Media Player and restarting it works most of the time. A computer restart also works occasionally. But if it failed, try the 2 methods mentioned below.

How to fix Windows Media Player service failure error

Disable Windows Media Player

  • Press the Windows key + R to open Run window
  • Type the command optionalfeatures in Run window and press Enter. This will open Windows Features window
  • Scroll down to Media Features option
  • Uncheck Windows Media Player
  • Restart Windows
  • Now open Windows Media Player and check if the problem is fixed.

Reset Windows Media Player

  • Press the Windows key + R to open Run window
  • Type the following parameters: C:\Windows\diagnostics\system\WindowsMediaPlayerConfiguration\DiagPackage.diagpkg
  • Click OK
  • Click Next. Windows automatically scans for problem
  • Click Apply this fix
  • Wait till the fix is applied and then click Close
  • Now check if Windows Media Player is working
