Windows search service is used by the OS to provide enhanced search capabilities. It is responsible for finding and displaying the search results from the indexed list. The service significantly improve the search speed and is one of the features that Microsoft did right in Windows 8.

Some users have reported problems with Windows Search Service failing after installing some updates or making some changes in Windows.

Step by step method to fix windows search service failed to start in Windows 8.1

  1. Press Windows Key + R for opening Run window. Type services.msc. This will open the list of services.
    Check for service related to Windows Search. Right click on the service. Select Restart to restart the service.
    In case, if the service is diabled, click on Start the service.
  2. Run a SFC scan. In case, if operating system files are corrupted, SFC scan should take care of it. Check if Windows Search Service is able to start now.
  3. Press Windows Key + R for opening Run window. Type regedit to open registry editor.
    Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE ->Microsoft -> Windows Search -> FileChangeClientConfigs. Change the value of FileChangeClientConfigs to FileChangeClientConfigsBak.
    Restart computer and check if the Windows Search Service is able to start now.
