Nokia Lumia 920 is Nokia’s flagship Windows 8 phone released on November 2, 2012. Nokia LUMIA 920 is the next in series to the very successful Nokia Lumia 900 which was released just 8 months back. Mac|Life Magazine hailed Lumia 900 as a better alternative to Apple iPhone and better than Android Phones. Lumia 920 is even better than its predecessor.

Nokia Lumia 920 comes in a chunky handset with a 10.7mm thickness, 130.3mm tall and 70.8mm width. It’s slightly thicker, taller and wider than an iPhone. The phone weighs 185 grams, a bit heavier than 112 gram iPhone. The industrial design makes the phone very easy to handle despite the increased size and look very much attractive like an iPhone.

The Lumia 920 is a single piece of tough molded plastic with a slightly convex screen.  The screen is 4.5-inch PureMotion HD with a large 768×1280-resolution inside a Corning Gorilla Glass front exterior. The resolution is the highest resolution in any Nokia phone released till now. The new model is available in black, yellow, cyan, white and red colors.

The phone is very fast, actually faster than iPhone after running a Sunspider JavaScript test which cloaked at 906.9ms. Browsing internet is snappy. The phone is operated by the latest Windows Phone 8 operating system. With Windows Phone 8, it’s much easier to manage and configure according to your likes. The phone provides 32GB capacity, which is neither removable nor upgradable. Microsoft provides free 7GB of SkyDrive cloud service which can be used to sync or upload your images, videos and other app data.

This is the first 4G Nokia phone which supports the high-speed 4G network LTE technology. Other connectivity features include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0 as well as USB v2.0. It also allows NFC (Near Field Communication) which allows communication between smartphones and similar devices by touching them together or bringing them into close proximity.

A big advantage of Windows phone is the new user friendly and beautiful interface. The windows tiles allow resizing the size of individual tiles so that there will be more space for your favourite tile to have more space and shrink space for the ones you don’t want to. There is a kid corner mode which allows selecting apps, videos, music or games which the kids can use while borrowing the phone from you, while locking out the rest of the handsets function.

Another feature is rooms feature which allows it easy to share contents with others.  You can create a room using the rooms app, select the person you want to add to your contacts which will send an invitation to join. Once your contact joins, you can easily share office appointments, photos, email or chat with other members of the room. If you have Windows Phone 8, Rooms integrate well with start apps as well.

nokia lumia 920 review

In addition to Windows Phone 8 features, Lumia 920 also comes with Nokia specific apps. Nokia Music apps allow streaming music for free or download it for later use. Nokia City Lens is a friendly city guide which uses an overlay to display the restaurants and entertainment areas in the area. Nokia Maps have also undergone significant changes. It can now be viewed offline and you can download the map of the entire world or a particular area.

The only disappointment of Nokia Lumia 920 is its weak imaging capabilities. The phone is equipped with a 8.7 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens on the back and a front-facing 720p HD camera. Some serious Optical image stabilization technology has enabled the phone to take blur free images and videos even in low light. The image stabilization has enabled Nokia in making the best quality 1080p HD at 30fps videos among all the smartphones tested.

The disappointment mainly came from still images taken using Lumia 920 which were less impressive. The pictures taken were well exposed, but colors were dull and not as sharp as we expect it to be. Even though the resulting images had noise reduced tremendously, it led to losing some details. Nokia is expected to release some updates in the near future which hopefully should take care of this problem.

The phone managed to give 7hrs of battery life. The phone also comes with a wireless charger. It also comes in matching colors of the phone.

Verdict: The Lumia 920 is a great phone. It has got a great screen, very fast and excellent Nokia-only apps to enhance Windows Phone 8. The only drawback is the lackluster camera, even though it managed to give superb video. Another drawback is limited app support as Windows 8 is new in market. Microsoft apps store is increasing tremendously with more apps added every day after the release of Windows 8, so this should not be an issue. Nokia Lumia 920 scores five stars with me.
