The Samsung Galaxy S9+ is probably the best smartphone Samsung has ever created. The similar-looking predecessor Galaxy S8+ is clearly surpassed. Samsung has clearly improved it at the crucial points and also outshines the house’s second flagship, the Note 8.
Samsung released 2 models – Samsung Galaxy S9 and Samsung Galaxy S9+. The technical data of the two flagships look pretty much the same at first glance especially the processor as well as the main memory. The display resolution is the same and both smartphones have the same variable aperture in the main camera. Even with the equipment, the two take not much. But there are enough differences to fight for a justification for the Samsung premium.
In addition to an extended memory capacity of 6 instead of 4 GB and the increased display size of 6.2 instead of 5.8 inches, it is mainly the battery and the camera that make the difference: The camera of the Galaxy S9 gets the Plus model Attached a brother who makes her a counterpart of the Galaxy Note 8 . The battery is, as with the predecessor pair Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S +, 500 mAh larger and thus pay tribute to the longer and wider display.
Samsung Galaxy S9+ Design
The main differences between the two new top models are not only visible on paper: The Galaxy S9 Plus is much larger and with its 0.4 inches larger panel also offers a whole shovel more display area. But what are the differences in design outside of size? The answers lie in the geometry, the operation and the optics of the back.
It comes with glass as the main material to the customer and shines and reflects what the stuff holds. For this, the edges on the long sides are rounded. The short sides come out without rounding towards the frame. All this is already known from the predecessor and offers so few surprises. However, the camera module and the associated components, as well as the fingerprint sensor, are rearranged and partly redesigned. So the Galaxy S9 + offers two camera modules with each other. This makes the bridge, which breaks through the back as a black bar, longer and more present. However, he does not seem distracting or even inappropriate. The fingerprint sensor extends it a bit, as it has now been positioned underneath the camera. The sensors positioned to the left of the camera and the LED light are now on the right. However, the unit is not connected to the camera fingerprint module and is also slightly out of the way. Due to the new arrangement, the symmetry of the Galaxy S8 + is lost, which does not bother visually.
On the front and on the frame, however, has done little. The look is the same at first glance, but the edges have shrunk a bit and the frame is a bit edged. For this purpose, the speaker has been redesigned, which is still integrated into the lower frame. He now no longer has a grid, which he blessed the world with music, but a continuous slot. The rest of the components on the underside remain the same: they are still slightly offset and therefore not symmetrical to the center of the frame. All of this takes place in the development category or “It stays the way it is” instead. Real innovations are not here.
Samsung Galaxy S9+ Display
Like the smaller model Galaxy S9, the Galaxy S9 +’s 6.2-inch giant Galaxy S9 + resolves with WQHD +, providing 1,440 x 2,220 pixels. This leads to a pixel density of over 500 ppi and thus far beyond the limit of the human perceptible. Display gourmets and VR enthusiasts will ponder the pixel count and call for more. But even ambitious users will be satisfied with the pixel density.
The situation is similar to the black and white values and the colors: Samsung is certainly moving in the high-end segment without admitting a weakness. If you do not like it then you can adjust the colors by hand or, with the preselected automatic, adapt to the respective situation. Then the Galaxy S9 + takes over the selection of color adjustments.
Thanks to the brightness of the Galaxy S9 + display, it can also be read in bright daylight. Added to this is an increase in contrast, which triggers the automatic brightness control as soon as the Galaxy S9 + realizes that it reaches its brightness maximum. If the panel adjusts to the environment, it does so quickly, to the point and almost without steps. But if you look closely, you realize that it is not quite analogous.
If you take a look at the Galaxy S9 + from a small angle, you will hardly notice a slight blue cast in the presentation. Here you can tilt into the extreme range, without any restrictions in readability. Not only are the main criteria of sharpness, brightness, and colors, but also the secondary qualities at the top level.
Samsung Galaxy S9+ Performance
Samsung installed in its large flagship an in-house Exynos processor in 10nm production and two quad-core packages. Together with the memory of 6 GB, it achieves an outstanding benchmark test value of just under 250,000 points in the AnTuTu test in version 7.0.4. This puts it at the top of ever tested at inside-handy.de Android devices. Added to this is the release of Samsung, the memory of 64 GB using Micro SD card to expand up to 400 GB. Thus, no user will have to suffer from lack of space. And if it does, then Samsung has a 256 GB version in the back of the hand, with a total of 656 GB of storage space.
The practical impression of the speed of the Galaxy S9 + is just like the Galaxy S9 perfectly. In the test time, the new flagship will never stumble or even have to catch his breath. Holperer or Ruckler one looks so in vain. The software gives the processor from its own house powerful to do. Bixby Vision with translation function, AR Emojis or recording 60 frames per second in 4K resolution would probably overwhelm half the smartphone market. But the Galaxy S9 + does not even grimace at all the gadgets and stubbornly works off all tasks.
In addition to the standard connectivity options, of which virtually all are, Samsung is once again adding DeX connectivity to the top-of-the-line package. With the improved DeX station, the flagship can now also be used as a touch screen and thus gets missed an additional function.
Samsung Galaxy S9+ Connectivity and biometric sensors
The biometric sensors in the Galaxy S9 + process not only the pulse, the oxygen saturation of the blood and the stress level but also the characteristic furrows of the fingertip and the structure of the iris in the eye. The sensor is located to the right of the camera module, which makes the fast measurement with the index finger even more problematic than with the little brother Galaxy S9: The finger must always reach over the camera module. So quickly grease comes about, which may even be seen in the next photo. With the grown in the Galaxy S9 size comes the distance of the module to the lower frame of the phone. Thus, virtually all users are forced to take the second hand to help or put the Plus model on the table. It is more positive in face recognition. Keep up with Galaxy Note 8. After some practice time, she then overtakes the older version of face recognition.
The equipment is completed with the obligatory safety on the S-line from moisture and dust. Here there is the industrial protection class IP68. Preventing the inadvertent entry of moisture through the SIM card slot protects a warning that pops up when the slot is opened or not fully closed.
The Galaxy S9 + is not only the new speed reference, but it also has all the necessary and sometimes unnecessary connectivity and biometric sensors. So there are hardly any complaints, except that the sensors are sometimes difficult to reach.
Samsung Galaxy S9+ Camera
As in the Galaxy S9 Samsung installed in the Plus version of the main camera with a variable aperture. The second camera takes over the portrait part and the zoom tasks in the module with a larger focal length. For this purpose, like the main camera, it is equipped with an OIS, ie image stabilization. So it does not matter which camera is being shot, the results are always stabilized. That’s a good thing because the second focal length is longer and so movements on the smartphone are even more clearly visible in the picture. Also on the camera software was rotated and the main modes in the viewfinder display integrated. For example, you can now quickly switch between automatic and manual mode.
The main camera with the variable iris and the front camera can be regarded as copies of those of the small Galaxy S9 and therefore come with the same strengths and weaknesses. The strengths are fast autofocus, strong colors, a great macro mode, and the variability through the aperture adjustment with more or less bokeh and more or less exposure time. However, the weaknesses are also very similar stored and concern the selfie as well as the main camera: The light reflections in the lens are also clearly visible and show it just in backlight unwanted ghosting and lens flares.
The much more interesting innovation on the Galaxy S9 + in the camera area is the second focal length. And here you have to give Samsung a clear thumbs up. Although the aperture is “only” at 1: 2.4, but Samsung installed a powerful sensor behind the longer focal length, which there is little loss of quality between the two cameras. The optical image stabilizer (OIS) in the telephoto camera also contributes to this. Between the zoom levels 1X and 2X, there is also a quality loss to be sought only with a magnifying glass.
Add to that the Galaxy S9 enhanced functionality. In addition to the better zoom, it is the live focus that draws the eyes of the testers. The image processor is fed with both sensor data and calculates a once again changed image. However, it also shows that the software is heavily involved and that there is already a sharp background in the focus areas that should not be there, as the focal plane is actually blurred.
With conventional videos, just like the Super SlowMo videos, only the main sensor can be used. Nevertheless, the response times are very short even with slightly zoomed in videos, as well as completely zoomed out. The exposure and the sharpness are set up very fast and thanks to OIS, quiet shots can be taken out of hand.
The super slow motion with 960 frames per second can also impress. Here, however, there is also criticism: Samsung brings the mode only in 720p while competitor Sony in its new top-of-the-range models Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compacta sensor with the same specifications but full HD resolution installed. Nevertheless, impressive Super SlowMo videos can be produced. Above all, the pre-selection of the starting area can be pleased: One selects a point in the picture and the slow-motion phase with 960 frames per second starts the moment in which the Galaxy S9 + detects a movement. If necessary, you have several attempts. This is how the video works, and the times when 960 frames are recorded start automatically over and over again.
The camera app was made clear by Samsung and still comes with a large portfolio of features. This includes the Animoji competition feature AR Emoji, which is fun and personalized emojis. They can be sent in WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. A total of 18 emotions are already pre-built and can be used in communication. However, the realism of the Emoji results raises questions. The look is not really fitting.
Bixby Vision is like on the Galaxy Note 8 also on board. Texts can be translated here and products can be recognized. For this, the photo app displays the calories of different foods. All nice gimmicks where the translation function offers the most value. To use Bixby Vision, the Galaxy S9 owner has to integrate into Samsung’s ecosystem and create an account there. If that’s too much data collection, you must forego this additional option.
The camera of the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is the best one can get at the moment with the Koreans and surpasses that of the Galaxy S9 in variability and the Galaxy Note 8 in quality. This leaves only the top grade to be awarded.
Samsung Galaxy S9+ Software
The software was repeatedly cited by Samsung as the core element of the redesign of the Galaxy S generation. So comes a new app for smart home applications on the top model: The “Smart Things App” controls everything that is compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S9 +. In addition, there is an improvement of the DeX function and the software-side combination of Iris scanner and Face-Unlock, which, however, should only land in May by a software update on the Galaxy S9 +.
Already Android 8 Oreo is integrated and the in-house user interface Experience UX in the newest version. On Android 8.1 but renounces Samsung and enters the 8.0 variant. Bloatware cannot be found on the Galaxy S9 +, but a set of Microsoft products and a collection of Samsung’s own functionalities. Among them are many useful software components such as the recording function with voice-to-text function and Samsung Health in which to collect the biometric data and sporting successes and failures.
The interface is simple and clear so that even newcomers to Samsung find their way quickly. This is also helped by the fact that in the settings related topics are “linked” and can be jumped so quickly from one setting area to the next. This approach is not new, but still good. Contacts, functionalities or apps can be faded in with the familiar sidebar, which prevents unnecessary searches in different apps or layers.
Samsung Galaxy S9+ Sound from AKG and Dolby Atmos
Even with the audio output was screwed to the software. The stereo speakers actually sound more spacious thanks to AKG’s Dolby Atmos and even make “normal” stereo sound a spatial experience. However, you should not hang the effect too high. It should not happen so often that you are happy about an orchestral sound in the S-Bahn. Nevertheless, the often criticized sound of the Galaxy S series on the external speakers with the stereo speaker set is passé.
The music output is navigated through Google’s own music app. So Samsung waives its own development and leaves the field to the search engine giant. This streamlines the software, prevents duplication and seems a bit loveless. This shows clearly the narrow degree and the dilemma of the manufacturers: own development or Google building blocks. Both have advantages but also disadvantages.
The Galaxy S9 + enclosed AKG headphones also do a very decent job and belong to the best that you can get in smartphone cases. They sound full and nothing is missing on the frequency band. Sometimes you want a bit more power in the lower part, but here you can help with the app software.
Samsung builds the wired music output continues on a 3.5mm jack. This dispenses with the digital music output via USB Type-C and does not hook in series of the manufacturer without a jam.
Clear, slim, tidy and basically the opposite of the Samsung software from the Galaxy S5. The Koreans are doing a great deal in this area and have also gained in multimedia performance. Thus, there is little room for improvement. It is still there.
Samsung Galaxy S9+ Battery Performance
The battery test includes active use of the smartphone for 30 minutes, video streaming, listening to the radio and talking on the phone for the first eight hours. During this time, screenshots and test images will be created, uploads and downloads made and surfed the internet. After the first phase is followed by a second, in which the standby time of 16 hours is passed through in which nothing is done with the smartphone.
The battery performance of the Samsung Galaxy S9 + could outperform the Galaxy S9 by a few percentage points. With a remaining display of 66 and 56 percent after 8 or 24 hours, the Plus model is more suitable for two-day use than the smaller Galaxy S9. The reason for this is the 3.500 mAh slightly larger battery. He compensates for the larger display and ensures a good rating. It is still supported by the fast charging technology, which feeds the energy storage quickly with new juice. The wireless charging option completes the battery pack.
Samsung Galaxy S9+ Conclusion
The Samsung Galaxy S9 + is the better choice than the conventional Galaxy S9. The surcharge of 100 euros is huge, but you move here at the market launch of the flagship couple anyway in an area that many other manufacturers from the performance as well as price never enter. But even smartphones claiming the throne of the best smartphone of the year may have weaknesses. This is what happens with the camera and the sensor position next to the camera. But far outweighing the positive impressions of the Galaxy S9 +. So the display is excellent, the sound is right the first time enters a top model of the Galaxy S series with a dual camera the mass market.
The leaps in innovation in the smartphone market are no longer annually and you can tell that the Galaxy S9 +, but it brings at least consistent improvements with it and thus inherits the Galaxy S8 + with a high head.
In the price range of the Samsung Galaxy S9 + are not so many smartphones on the market that would quickly lose the overview. The price of 949 euros calls only a few manufacturers. That’s why there are cheaper alternatives. But you can also spend more money. If you are looking for absolute top technology, you can hardly ignore the following smartphones: Huawei Mate 10 Pro, Apple iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy Note8
