Only half a year after the launch of the Galaxy Watch Active, Samsung is following suit with the next generation of smartwatches. But why? We took a closer look at the new Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 in the first test.
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 Design
Whether in 40 or 44 millimeters: The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 is a rather small, delicate watch, not a big block on the arm like many other smartwatches. The round case has two buttons on the right side that barely protrude out of the device. Together with the touch screen, they serve to operate the smartwatch, which has to do without a rotatable bezel. This ring around the display had many Samsung smartwatches excellent but had to give way to the first Galaxy Watch Active touch operation. Samsung replaces the Galaxy Watch Active 2 with the so-called “digital bezel”.
The heart rate monitor is located at the bottom of the superbly finished stainless steel case. Samsung has looked around in terms of health features, especially at Apple and now also offers the ability to create an ECG with the smartwatch. That this can not replace the doctor’s visit in case of doubt, should be clear, meaningful, these things anyway.
Samsung equips the Galaxy Watch Active 2 with a standard watchband mount. Good thing, because at least the black silicone bracelet, which we tried, was quite comfortable to wear, but not necessarily pretty to look at. So you can use the normal accessories in the shops and customize the Galaxy Watch Active 2, as you please. The Galaxy Watch Active is fairly light in all versions, the weight varies from 26 grams for the aluminum version without LTE in 40 millimeters to 42 grams at 44 millimeters with LTE. The Galaxy Watch Active is certified to IP68 and thus well protected against water and dust. It can withstand up to 5 ATM water pressure and is therefore always with you when showering, swimming or swimming.
Galaxy Watch Active 2 Screen
The Super AMOLED display has a size of 1.2 or 1.4 inches and represents 360 x 360 pixels. Just for a clock, such an AMOLED panel is a blessing, as it can be very energy efficient to represent the time – black areas, after all, they consume virtually no energy. The display of the Galaxy Watch Active 2 is very nice to look at in the test, the fine animations on the screen do something and the presentation is clear despite the small size.
Galaxy Watch Active 2 Controls
The round arrangement of the buttons in Samsung’s operating system Tizen optically matches the shape of the Galaxy Watch Active 2. The middle of the screen remains mostly free in the menus. In terms of functionality, Tizen can now keep up with Wear OS quite well, all key features of a smartwatch dominated the Watch Active 2. The dial can customize the user with the app “My Style”. Appropriate apps for cycling, buying, walking, swimming, and rowing are available as well as the comprehensive health monitoring through the Health App from Samsung.
Galaxy Watch Active 2 OS
The performance of the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 is perfect in the first test. The clock runs fast and smooth, the Exynos 9110 with four cores does a good job. The memory depends on the radio technology: With LTE, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 1.5 GB of RAM, without LTE, it is only half. The internal memory of the smartwatch is 4 GB in size. That’s fine enough for a smartwatch.
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 Battery
Samsung equips the Galaxy Watch Active 2 in the LTE version with a 340 mAh strong battery. Without LTE it is 247 mAh. That should be enough for a decent runtime, but we still have to check this in the test with the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2. Charging is wireless as usual.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 Conclusion:
The Galaxy Watch Active 2 is very smartwatch with many features. Compared to the Galaxy Watch Active, which was presented in February together with the Galaxy S10, but the jumps are small. If you can do without the digital bezel and the ECG recording, then you have no reason to buy the new watch.
